CJS Payroll Limited is a payroll bureau with a fast paced and dynamic working environment. The payroll function processes approx. 500 clients paying in excess of 50,000 employees both in the UK and Ireland.

You will have your own portfolio of both UK and Ireland clients working within a close-knit team responsible for high volume processing, resolving queries and general payroll related tasks. This is a very busy role that requires exceptional attention to detail and would suit a highly organised, flexible individual who is accurate and used to dealing with a wide variety of duties and is able to prioritise their workload.

Job Purpose

Lead your Payroll Team in providing a professional and responsive Payroll service to our clients by adhering to defined service level agreements and statutory requirements, ensuring accurate payment every month.

This person will play a pivotal role helping to grow the company, strengthen it and ensure its sustainability.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To manage the Payroll Team in ensuring that all clients staff are paid accurately, and that payslips, statutory returns and reports are produced and validated in a timely manner.
  • Ensure appropriate workload allocation, sharing of knowledge, review performance and instil a culture of continuous improvement and outstanding customer service.
  • To undertake day-to-day payroll activity to ensure practical knowledge and smooth running of the service, enabling provision of cover on all payrolls.
  • Ensure that business goals are clearly communicated to Payroll Administrators and linked to individual and team objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory and pension scheme requirements, eg, P11Ds, auto-enrolment.
  • Validation and reconciliation of post payroll output and the loading of costing files to General Ledger.
  • Preparation and reconciliation of month end payments to external agencies, such as HMRC and pension.
  • Manage all year end statutory returns required by, for example, HMRC.
  • Keep up to date with relevant regulations/legislation, taking action and implementing changes where necessary.
  • Ensure Payroll team are fully informed of any such changes and all working procedures are up to date.
  • Use appropriate communication channels to update clients on any pension’s news/changes in a timely manner.
  • Utilise relevant reporting tools to maximize efficiency of processes, accuracy of data and to develop relevant Payroll KPIs.
  • Seek feedback from customers and respond to any compliments, concerns or complaints.
  • Support and Mentor staff development using our online training tool “ACT”.
  • Support and develop a continuous improvement mindset within your team and the organisation. 

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Exhibit strong leadership skills including the ability to resolve both internal and external queries.
  • Increase departmental effectiveness, engagement and accountability by communicating values, strategies and objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate direct report employees including undertaking appraisals, coaching and mentoring activities to develop and up-skill direct reports.
  • Work closely with the Head of Operations to ensure effective functioning through all areas of the business.

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum of Two-years Payroll experience.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team in fast-paced business environment.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel essential.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with key business stakeholders including colleagues, management, clients and auditors.
  • Adaptable to change and open to new ideas with a growth mindset.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and deliver on pre-set objectives.
